Thale am Harz issued this 10 Pfennig Notgeld in 1918, when the wartime metal shortage had stripped Germany's small-change supply down to almost nothing. Municipal administrations across the country — from large cities to small industrial towns like Thale — were left to paper over the gap themselves, printing emergency notes through local printers with no central design authority dictating terms.
Thale's economy at the time was anchored by the Hüttenwerk ironworks. The town had practical reasons to keep small-denomination exchange circulating among its workforce.
