Rendsburg's 1918 Kleingeldscheine — small-change notes — were a direct response to the wartime hoarding of metal coins. By mid-1918, copper and nickel had been redirected to armaments production for years, and municipal authorities across Germany were issuing their own emergency fractions to keep local commerce moving. Rendsburg was one of hundreds of towns that printed low-denomination paper to fill the gap left by vanishing Pfennig coinage.
These municipal issues had no backing guarantee beyond the issuing city's word, and most were redeemed and destroyed within a year or two of issue — which keeps surviving examples genuinely scarce despite the large print runs that many towns ordered.
