Bentschen — now Zbąszyń in western Poland — was a small Prussian border town whose municipal authority issued this Notgeld in 1918 as the imperial economy buckled under wartime shortages of metal coinage. Thousands of German towns and communes did the same, but Bentschen's issues are among the less-documented provincial examples, printed in small quantities for purely local use and rarely travelling far from the point of issue.
The town changed hands following the Versailles settlement in 1919, becoming part of the newly reconstituted Polish state — which effectively ended any redemption prospects for unspent notes still in circulation.
