Linz am Rhein is a small town on the eastern bank of the Rhine in the Rhineland, and its 1917 notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency that swept German towns during the First World War as small-denomination coins were hoarded or melted. The printer, M. Dumont Schauberg of Cologne, was primarily a newspaper and publishing house — one of Germany's oldest, founded in 1620 — and handled a significant volume of Rhineland notgeld contracts during the war years precisely because commercial printers were more accessible than the overburdened official currency presses.
First-wave 1917 notgeld tends to be plainer than the decorative "collector" issues that flooded the market from 1920 onward, when municipalities printed explicitly for philatelic sale rather than genuine circulation need.
