Neckargemünd, a small town on the Neckar river in Baden, issued this Notgeld note in 1917 as wartime metal shortages forced municipalities across Germany to produce their own small-denomination emergency currency. The Reichsbank had effectively abandoned low-value coinage to the metal drives, leaving towns to fill the gap themselves.
Municipal Notgeld of this period was typically printed in short runs by local printers and authorized only for redemption within the issuing community — giving these notes a circulation radius sometimes measured in city blocks.
