Cuba's early-1990s wildlife series emerged directly from the collapse of Soviet subsidies — the "Special Period in Time of Peace" left the island in acute hard currency shortage, and the Banco Nacional responded by issuing an aggressive run of collector silver targeting foreign buyers. The Yellow Grouper piece belongs to that push. These coins never circulated domestically; they were vehicles for earning convertible currency, full stop.
The colorization was applied post-strike, a technique increasingly common in the period as mints competed for the novelty-collector market. KM#443 is among the lower-profile entries in the series, with limited secondary-market presence outside specialist Caribbean and marine-life topical collections.
