Cuba's late-1980s and early-1990s sports commemorative program was prolific to the point of market saturation — dozens of silver issues across multiple series flooded collector channels simultaneously, most struck at the Havana mint or contracted abroad. Volleyball appeared in this lineup largely because Cuba's women's national team had become a dominant international force, winning consecutive World Championships in 1978 and 1990 and Olympic gold in 1980 and 1992. The timing of this issue, released the same year the national team reclaimed the World Championship title, was deliberate.
