| Additional information |
The Galatea is a Spanish Navy sail training vessel, an 1896-built iron-hulled topsail schooner that remained in active service training officer cadets well into the late twentieth century. Cuba's commemorative program of this period leaned heavily on maritime themes, partly as a nod to the island's deep nautical history and partly because such subjects reliably attracted the collector and thematic bullion market that sustained the Empresa Cubana de Acuñaciones through the Special Period's economic contraction.
