Additional information

Easter Island has no independent monetary authority — these pieces were produced as private issues marketed to collectors, with no legal tender status under Chilean law. The "Chilean States" designation is a catalog convention, not a political reality. The Tangata Manu was the winner of an annual ceremonial competition held at Orongo in which competitors raced to retrieve the first sooty tern egg of the season from the islet of Motu Nui — the victor's clan held ritual authority over the island for the following year, a tradition that persisted into the 1860s.
