Piedfort coins — struck at double the normal planchet thickness — originated as a French mint practice dating to the 16th century, used to produce presentation pieces for dignitaries and as die-approval proofs. Cuba adopted the format sporadically in the early 1990s for its collector-targeted hard currency series, at a moment when the collapse of Soviet subsidies had essentially destroyed the peso's purchasing power domestically and foreign exchange had become existential for the state.
