The Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898 ended Spanish naval power in the Western Hemisphere in under four hours. Admiral Cervera's squadron, blockaded in Santiago harbor for weeks, made a desperate breakout attempt under direct orders from Madrid — orders Cervera himself had warned were suicidal. Every Spanish ship was sunk or run aground. The defeat accelerated Spain's exit from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines simultaneously, concluded by the Treaty of Paris that December.
Cuba's centennial commemorative program of 1998 produced numerous .999 silver issues tied to the war's anniversary.
