Issued as part of a provincial capitals series released for the turn of the millennium, this piece commemorates Santa Cruz del Seibo, one of the oldest settlements on Hispaniola and capital of El Seibo province in the eastern interior. The town's founding dates to the early sixteenth century, placing it among the first permanent Spanish colonial establishments in the Americas.
At 2.45 grams of .999 silver, these were never intended for circulation — pure silver at that weight and diameter makes for a fragile, impractical coin.
