Rafael Carrera ruled Guatemala from 1844 until his death in 1865, making this 1869 issue a posthumous emission struck in his name — a deliberate political act by the conservative factions that had built their power around his caudillo government. The coin was produced under his named authority four years after he died, an unusual circumstance that reflects the ideological weight his memory carried for the ruling elite.
