The Banco del Litoral operated out of Rosario, one of several provincial Argentine banks that briefly flourished before the national banking reforms of the 1890s crushed most of them. This note, denominated in pesos plata boliviana rather than pesos fuertes, reflects the currency confusion endemic to the Río de la Plata region in the 1870s — Bolivian silver coinage circulated widely in the interior and northwestern provinces, and commercial banks sometimes calibrated their paper to that specie standard to maintain credibility with merchants who didn't trust local coin equivalencies.
