Honduras never adopted a 10 Peso copper-nickel coin for circulation in 1871 — this piece exists solely as a pattern, likely produced to evaluate potential coinage reforms following the country's monetary reorganization in the early 1870s. Pattern strikes from Central American republics of this period were frequently produced at outside mints, with Philadelphia and European facilities both courting newly independent states with sample strikes they hoped would translate into production contracts.
