1892 was Columbus year — the quadricentennial of his 1492 landing triggered a wave of commemorative and pattern coinage across Latin America, and El Salvador was no exception. This copper piece is almost certainly a trial strike produced in connection with that commemorative impulse rather than any genuine monetary proposal; El Salvador had no 10 Peso denomination in circulation and no practical reason to introduce one at that size in base metal.
Pattern coinage from Central American republics of this period was frequently struck in Europe, with Spanish and Belgian mints producing trial pieces on spec for governments that rarely followed through.
