Issued to mark the Catholic Jubilee Year of 2000, this piece belongs to a series honoring the patronal shrines of the Dominican Republic. The Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Altagracia in Higüey draws the largest annual pilgrimage in the Caribbean, but the Rosario devotion represented here is rooted in the colonial-era Dominican church — the Convento de los Dominicos in Santo Domingo, where the first American university, the Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, was established in 1538.
