| Description de l’avers | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield surmounted by a Phrygian cap atop a fasces, the shield itself divided into three sections showing a golden key between two coastal promontories, a rising sun over the sea, and a royal palm tree against a mountainous landscape. The arms are flanked by two branches — an oak branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right — tied together at the base. The Nao Victoria was the sole surviving vessel of Magellan's 1519–1522 circumnavigation — five ships departed Spain, and only this one returned, limping into Sanlúa de Barrameda under Juan Sebastián Elcano with 18 men from an original crew of roughly 270. Cuba's 1994 hard-currency commemorative series targeted the approaching quincentennial of European contact with the Americas, and this issue belongs to that wave of collector-market silver struck explicitly for foreign exchange rather than domestic circulation, at a time when the U.S. embargo and the collapse of Soviet subsidies had gutted the island's economy.
