Cuba's "La Fuerza" series draws its name from the Castillo de la Real Fuerza in Havana, begun in 1558 and among the oldest surviving European fortifications in the Americas. The castle's construction was partly a response to the 1555 sacking of Havana by French privateer Jacques de Sores, who held the city for three weeks — an event that forced the Spanish Crown to finally commit serious resources to Caribbean coastal defense.
