Additional information

Cuba's hard-currency commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was driven almost entirely by foreign exchange need rather than numismatic tradition — these pieces were minted for export sale, not domestic circulation, at a time when the post-Soviet economic collapse was beginning to bite Havana's finances severely. Spain was a natural subject: the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first voyage generated an entire wave of issues across the Caribbean and Latin America, and Cuban state mint output swelled accordingly.

The Ferdinand commemoratives from this program were struck in limited proof quantities and distributed almost exclusively through European and North American coin dealers.
