Trial strikes produced by the Cuban state mint in 1989 occupy an odd position in Cuban numismatics — they exist outside the regular emission program and were never approved for public release, functioning instead as internal proofs of concept for proposed issues. The pairing of Martí and Castro on a single coin was politically deliberate, casting Castro's revolution as the direct fulfillment of Martí's 19th-century independence movement, a lineage the government had promoted aggressively since 1959.
