Additional information

Piedfort coins — struck at twice the standard planchet thickness — have roots in French assay practice dating to the sixteenth century, originally produced as presentation pieces for treasury officials to verify die quality. Cuba's adoption of the format in the 1990 Olympic series through the Empresa Cubana de Acuñaciones was commercially motivated, targeting the collector market as hard-currency revenue became increasingly critical following the collapse of Soviet subsidies. The timing was not incidental.

The JMA reference places this firmly within the joint mint archive documentation system used to catalog Cuban issues produced in collaboration with foreign minting facilities during this period.
