The Banco de la República del Paraguay was a short-lived institution — it operated only from 1936 until 1944, when it was replaced by the Banco del Paraguay. This note was printed by the American Bank Note Company, the dominant supplier of Latin American currency throughout the mid-twentieth century, whose contract relationship with Paraguay predated this institution and continued well after it dissolved.
The 1936 dating places this issue in the immediate aftermath of the Chaco War, a brutal three-year conflict with Bolivia that ended in June 1935 and left Paraguay financially exhausted. Currency reorganization followed quickly.
