The Proveeduría de Víveres del Ejército — the army provisioning office operated by the merchant house of Lezica y Lanús — issued these notes during Argentina's occupation of Paraguay following the War of the Triple Alliance. The war had ended in March 1870 with the death of Francisco Solano López, leaving Paraguay economically destroyed and without a functioning currency system. Argentine occupation forces and their associated contractors filled that void with privately-backed scrip.
Lezica y Lanús was a prominent Buenos Aires commercial firm, not a bank. Their backing of military supply notes reflects how thoroughly private merchant credit underwrote Argentine military logistics in this period.
