Magellan's connection to Cuba is essentially administrative — the coin commemorates the explorer under his Spanish name as part of Cuba's long-running series of silver issues honoring figures from the Age of Exploration. The series leaned heavily on Iberian navigators, and Magellan was a reliable subject given Spain's enduring claim on his legacy despite his Portuguese origins.
He never reached Cuba. He was killed in the Philippines in April 1521 at Mactan, leaving Elcano to complete the circumnavigation.
