El Banco de Durango was one of roughly two dozen state-chartered banks operating under Mexico's 1897 Ley General de Instituciones de Crédito, which gave each institution a regional monopoly but constrained note issuance to three times paid-in capital. The long date range on this series reflects how stable Durango's banking environment remained relative to the upheaval elsewhere — until the Revolution made the entire concession system untenable and Carranza's 1916 nationalization decree rendered all such private bank notes worthless overnight.

ABNC's involvement was nearly universal among Mexican state banks of this period, the New York firm supplying standardized security printing that most provincial institutions lacked any local means to replicate.
