Isla del Evangelista — now Isla de la Juventud — was sighted by Columbus in 1494 during his second voyage and later served as a holding point for pirates operating in the western Caribbean. Cuba renamed it in 1978, a politically motivated rebranding tied to the island's role as a showcase for revolutionary youth education programs.
