José Martí was killed on May 19, 1895 at Dos Ríos, charging Spanish lines on horseback just weeks after returning to Cuba to lead the war of independence he had spent years organizing from exile in New York. The centennial of his death fell in a particularly grim moment for Cuba — the Special Period austerity following Soviet collapse had gutted the economy, and commemorative silver issues like this one were minted almost entirely for foreign hard-currency sales rather than domestic circulation.
