Cuba's Foreign Exchange Certificate series was a parallel currency system introduced to capture hard currency from tourists and diplomats while keeping convertible pesos out of ordinary domestic circulation. These certificates were legally required for purchases at dollar-denominated Cubatur and Intur shops — a two-tier monetary structure that persisted, with modifications, until the peso convertible replaced it in 1994.
The narrow 'D' variety is a collector distinction within the FX35 series, differentiated by the width of the overprinted or engraved denomination letter — a minor but catalogued typographic variant produced during the Prague runs by Státní Tiskárna Cenin, the Czechoslovak state security printer that handled much of Cuba's note production from the 1960s onward.
