Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse displays the Cuban national coat of arms at the left of centre — a shield bearing a golden key between two promontories above a rising sun, with a royal palm in the central panel, surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a fasces, and flanked by sprays of oak and laurel. To the right of the arms, a multi-line commemorative legend in the field reads '30 ANIVERSARIO DE LA CAIDA EN COMBATE DE ERNESTO GUEVARA DE LA SERNA Y SUS COMPAÑEROS.' The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DE CUBA' arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination '10 PESOS' appears along the lower rim, flanked by the silver fineness indication '1 OZ' and 'AG 0,999'. The design is executed in proof finish with deeply mirrored fields contrasting against frosted relief elements.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse features a finely rendered bust of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara in three-quarter left-facing profile, depicted bearded and wearing a military jacket, occupying the central field. The inscription 'GUERRILLERO HEROICO' arcs along the upper left rim, while the commemorative dates '1967-1997' are positioned along the upper right. Guevara's facsimile signature appears incuse across the lower portion of the bust. A small mint mark device is visible to the right of the portrait in the mid-field. The proof surface presents strongly contrasting mirror fields and frosted high relief on the portrait.

Aanvullende informatie

Cuba issued a substantial run of silver commemoratives throughout the 1990s, many targeting the collector export market to generate hard currency — ironic, given the U.S. embargo made American collectors among the most eager buyers through third-party dealers. This piece honors Ernesto Guevara in his capacity as president of the Banco Nacional de Cuba, a post he held from November 1959 to February 1961, during which he famously signed banknotes simply "Che."

His appointment was reportedly the result of a misunderstanding at a cabinet meeting — Fidel Castro asked who present was an economist, and Guevara raised his hand, later admitting he thought Castro had said "communist."
