Cuba's Caribbean Fauna series ran through the 1990s as a deliberate hard-currency earner — these coins were never intended for domestic circulation and were sold almost entirely to foreign collectors and dealers through state export channels. The Cuban peso had no convertibility at the time, making proof silver issues like this one a quiet mechanism for acquiring foreign exchange outside the tourist dollar economy.
The swallowtail represented here is almost certainly Papilio caiguanabus, the Poey's Black Swallowtail, endemic to Cuba and considered vulnerable due to habitat pressure in the Zapata Peninsula region.
