Additional information

Captain Kidd's actual historical reputation is considerably more ambiguous than the pirate legend suggests — he was hanged in 1701 largely as a political convenience, his privateering commission having become an embarrassment to the English lords who had quietly backed his voyage. Cuba's mid-1990s commemorative silver program leaned heavily into Caribbean piracy themes during a period when the government was aggressively courting hard currency through collector coin sales following the Soviet subsidy collapse.
