Camilo Cienfuegos — comandante of the July 26th Movement and one of the commanders at the Battle of Yaguajay — disappeared on October 28, 1959, just nine months after the revolutionary victory, when his Cessna 310 vanished over the Florida Straits. No wreckage was ever recovered. The circumstances remain officially unexplained, though the timing, just days after Cienfuegos had escorted Huber Matos to custody following Matos's resignation in protest of communist influence, has fed speculation for decades.
