Banco Paraná was one of several provincial Argentine banks that began issuing paper currency in the 1860s under legislation that gave provincial governments wide latitude to charter note-issuing institutions. The Entre Ríos province bank that bears this name should not be confused with the Paraguayan or Bolivian institutions of similar naming — the "Pesos Bolivianos" denomination reflects the monetary unit then current in Argentina, inherited from earlier regional practice, not any Bolivian connection.
American Bank Note Company had become the dominant supplier to South American issuers by this period, and the engraved plates produced in New York were typically of considerably higher quality than anything available locally. Whether the notes reached general circulation in meaningful quantity is unclear — provincial bank failures in this decade were common, and many issues were short-lived.
