Cuba's bee hummingbird — the world's smallest bird at roughly 6 cm and found nowhere else on earth — became a recurring subject for Cuban commemorative silver issues in the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period when the island's mint was aggressively targeting the international collector market for hard currency revenue. Following the collapse of Soviet subsidies in the early 1990s, numismatic exports became a measurable line item in Cuba's foreign exchange strategy.
