Banco Popular de la República Oriental del Uruguay was one of several private commercial banks authorized to issue currency under Uruguay's 1867 banking law, which permitted note-issuing privileges to capitalized institutions without requiring a government monopoly. The arrangement lasted until the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay was established in 1896, after which private emission was progressively curtailed. Notes from Banco Popular rarely turn up in collections outside South America, suggesting limited survival rather than abundant original issue.
