Banco Navia y Cía. was one of several short-lived private commercial banks operating in Colombia during the 1860s, a period when the federal Rionegro Constitution of 1863 had devolved significant economic authority to individual states, allowing regional merchant houses to issue their own circulating notes. The American Bank Note Company contract work for this issue is unsurprising — ABNC was the dominant supplier to Latin American private banks throughout the decade, often recycling border and vignette elements across unrelated clients.
Documentation on Banco Navia's actual circulation period is thin. The bank did not survive into the consolidation era, and surviving examples of this issue are genuinely uncommon.
