Banco Italiano del Uruguay was one of several private commercial banks operating in Uruguay before the state monopoly on note issuance was established under the 1896 banking reforms. This note predates that consolidation by nearly a decade, placing it firmly in the pluralistic — and frequently chaotic — period when Italian immigrant business networks had genuine financial infrastructure in Montevideo.
ABNC's New York presses handled much of South America's private bank paper in this period, and the quality of production typically outpaced the solvency of the institutions ordering it. The Banco Italiano del Uruguay did not survive into the twentieth century.
