The FX (exchangeable peso) series was introduced in Cuba as a parallel currency for use in dollar-only retail networks — the so-called "diplotiendas" — originally accessible only to diplomats and foreign workers but later extended to any Cuban holding hard currency. The 'A' suffix designation on this note distinguishes it from related FX issues and reflects an internal control classification within that exchange certificate system, not a simple print run variant.
Státní Tiskárna Cenin had been supplying Cuban currency since the early revolutionary period, a relationship born from Cold War alignment rather than open tender. Czech-printed Cuban notes of this era are often identifiable by a characteristic ink density in the intaglio work.
