The Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, launched by the FAO itself in 1968, recruited member nations to issue commemorative pieces carrying agricultural themes, with the organization subsidizing participation to spread its messaging globally. Cuba joined enthusiastically, producing multiple FAO-linked issues across several decades despite its chronic shortage of hard currency — a pointed irony, given the island's persistent food rationing system that was still firmly in place in 1995.
