Formosa is one of several Argentine provinces that resorted to issuing their own quasi-currencies during the 2001–2002 convertibility crisis, when the federal government's freeze on bank withdrawals — the infamous "corralito" — strangled the local money supply. These provincial notes, generically called "cuasimonedas," functioned as wage payments and change substitutes, circulating under provincial guarantee rather than the Banco Central.
Casa de Moneda, the federal printing house, produced notes for several provinces simultaneously during this period, which creates occasional confusion about emission dates and series numbers. The PS# reference being unassigned suggests this piece hasn't been formally catalogued in a major specialized listing — not uncommon for the smaller provincial emissions, many of which were redeemed and withdrawn within two years.
