Provincia de Corrientes issued its own paper currency during a severe provincial fiscal crisis in the late 1990s, when several Argentine provinces resorted to quasi-moneys — locally issued bonds functioning as circulating currency — to pay salaries and cover obligations that the provincial treasury could no longer meet in national pesos. These instruments, sometimes called "cuasimonedas," proliferated across Argentina before the national collapse of 2001–2002 forced a reckoning and eventual federal absorption of most provincial debts.
Casa de Moneda's involvement lent the notes a degree of physical credibility that some other provincial emissions lacked — the same facility producing national currency was printing Corrientes' fiscal paper.
