The outer aluminium-bronze ring carries the numeral denomination $10 at top centre, the mint year to the left, and the Mexico City mint mark Mo to the right, all in Latin characters; the denomination in words DIEZ PESOS is inscribed along the lower arc of the ring. Mexico's bimetallic coinage program launched in 1992 as part of the broader monetary reform that also introduced the nuevo peso, effectively redenominating the currency at 1,000 to 1 following decades of peso devaluation driven by oil-price collapses and the 1982 debt crisis. The 10 peso denomination sat at a practical mid-range value for daily transactions and was among the first bimetallic coins produced at the Casa de Moneda in volume for general circulation rather than collector purposes.
The 1997 design revision — catalogued as KM#616 — replaced the earlier transitional "nuevo peso" inscription as Mexico dropped the "nuevo" designation from its currency that same year.
