Banco Salvadoreño was one of several private commercial banks operating in El Salvador during the era of free banking that preceded the 1934 establishment of the Banco Central de Reserva. These institutions issued their own circulating notes under government concession, and the American Bank Note Company in New York was the prestige choice for such commissions — the ABNC imprint carried real weight with a public that had seen plenty of poorly printed domestic currency from smaller regional issuers.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference places this firmly in the private commercial bank series, distinct from government-issue paper. By 1934, when the new central bank took over note issue and private bank currency was withdrawn, most of these Salvadoreño notes were redeemed and destroyed. Survivors at any grade are thin on the ground.
