The Banco Hipotecario de la Provincia de Buenos Aires was a mortgage bank, not a commercial one — its notes were backed by land securities rather than metallic reserves, a distinction that mattered enormously during the 1890 Baring Crisis, when Argentina's financial system came apart under the weight of speculative lending and foreign debt.
