The Banco de Talca was one of several Chilean provincial banks empowered to issue their own currency under the Ley de Bancos of 1860, a decentralized arrangement that persisted until the state moved to consolidate note-issuing authority in the 1890s. ABNC supplied engraved plates and printed sheets to dozens of Latin American private banks during this period — the Talca contract was part of that broader commercial relationship, not a specially commissioned production.
Chile's 1878 suspension of convertibility complicated the position of provincial issuers considerably, and notes from smaller regional banks like this one circulated in conditions of genuine monetary uncertainty. Survival rates for Talca issues are low.
