El Banco Español de la Habana was the dominant commercial bank in colonial Cuba, operating under Spanish crown charter and handling much of the island's trade finance. Commissioning its notes from the National Bank Note Company in New York was a straightforward commercial decision — NBNC was producing high-quality security printing for dozens of institutions across the Americas at the time, and proximity to Havana made New York a practical choice regardless of any political awkwardness in sourcing from a foreign press.
The "186x" dating indicates the year's final digit was completed by hand at issuance, a common practice for series printed in advance across multiple years.
