The Banco Nacional de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata was a short-lived institution, chartered in 1826 and forced into liquidation by 1836 after becoming entangled in the fiscal chaos of the Cisplatine War against Brazil and the chronic inability of the Argentine provincial governments to service their obligations. Notes of this bank circulated at heavy discounts almost from the outset — public confidence never fully materialized.

Printed locally in Buenos Aires rather than abroad, the production quality reflects the limitations of what was available in the Río de la Plata at the time.
