The Banco de Buenos Ayres was the first bank established in what is now Argentina, founded in 1822 under the direction of Bernardino Rivadavia as part of a broader program of institutional modernization for the newly independent province. It had a short, troubled life — a currency crisis and political pressure forced it to suspend specie payments within a few years, and the bank was ultimately absorbed into a successor institution in 1826.
Printed locally in Buenos Aires rather than by one of the established European security printers, the note reflects the limited production infrastructure of a young provincial administration still building its financial institutions from scratch. Local printing of this period is generally considered a vulnerability in the series — quality control was inconsistent.
