Ghana redenominated its currency in July 2007, replacing the old cedi at a rate of 10,000:1 — meaning this coin's face value was equivalent to 100,000 of the previous cedi notes that had been circulating just months before. The redenomination was driven by chronic inflation that had reduced the old cedi to near-worthlessness for large transactions, forcing Ghanaians to carry bricks of banknotes for routine purchases.
The nickel-plated steel composition was chosen partly on cost grounds, a practical concession given Ghana's commodity-export economy remained vulnerable to external shocks throughout the series' production window.
